Studiomapp at the UN General Assembly to present sustainable development projects for the 2030 Agenda.

According to the report “Digital with purpose: Delivering a SMARTer2030”, Studiomapp, founded by Angela Corbari and Leonardo Alberto Dal Zovo, is the only Italian startup that is implementing projects that are helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (Sustainable Development Goals) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

The study, presented on Friday 27 September 2019 in New York, is carried out by the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), an international organization that brings together around 40 of the most important telecommunications companies in the world to promote the environmental and social sustainability of the new technologies, and Deloitte, a leading company in business consulting.

Studiomapp is mentioned in three sustainability objectives, and for this reason, we were invited to participate and present its activities to some events of the General Assembly of the United Nations in the week from 23 to 28 September 2019. This was possible also thanks to the support of ICE with the Global Startup Program.

“We are specialized in Location Intelligence, that is the study and analysis of the territory”, explains Angela Corbari, co-founder and operational director of Studiomapp, “which has led us more and more to use and interpret satellite images with artificial intelligence techniques to find information about territory and environment on a global scale. Thanks to the technologies we have developed, it’s possible to tackle some of the difficult challenges to safeguard and improve the quality of life on our planet in a faster, safer and more efficient way ”.

Leonardo Alberto Dal Zovo, cofounder and technical director of Studiomapp adds: “In the last year we have specialized in artificial intelligence applied to satellite images and drones, to create solutions that have a positive impact on our society, the economy, and our planet. Thanks to these technologies, last October we were the only European company to win a challenge from the US Department of Defense to speed up rescue operations after natural disasters, and in May we were the first startup to win a NATO Communication and Information Agency, to help combat illegal fishing. We are pleased that these and other innovation projects we are developing have been taken as a worldwide example to demonstrate how technology can have a positive impact. Today they are presented to the United Nations, where the 2030 Agenda for the sustainable development was adopted by member countries four years ago in 2015. ”
Angela Corbari concludes: “It is a moment of great enthusiasm for the space race we are experiencing and the launch of many new satellites in the coming years. Earth observation from above is destined to be increasingly relevant and effective in solving problems that are not only environmental but also social and industrial.

For this reason, Studiomapp is working with partners, companies, and non-governmental organizations of international importance to be able to interpret the enormous amount of data available thanks to the use of artificial intelligence “. Studiomapp is supported by prestigious institutions and organizations, including the Ministry of Economic Development and ICE under the Global Startup Program, the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency and Lazio Innova through ESA BIC Lazio, and has been part of the Climate-KIC acceleration program managed in Italy by ART-ER.

The report shows the progress of each of the 17 sustainable development goals and presents some relevant use cases which are displaying positive impacts. Studiomapp is involved in projects that are pursuing three objectives.

Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and infrastructures: infrastructures and construction sites monitoring

Studiomapp is researching in the area of digital transformation for the Open Italy programme, organized by Elis with the intent to help the collaboration between corporates and startups. For Snam we are testing the automatic identification of interferences through satellites on Snam Italian pipelines. For Italferr and Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato, we are working on the automatization of construction sites progress monitoring with the automatic recognition of vehicles, equipment and waste, using drones. With Acea we aim to improve the quality of public lighting in Rome, to do so we are monitoring public illumination and the influence of vegetation on it.

Goal 11 – Sustainable cities and communities: designing and monitoring resilient sustainable cities

Studiomapp is developing Qirate, a location intelligence service that measures the quality of life in urban areas using various official data sources to gather the most complete and reliable information, even farther than before. With the European Space Agency Studiomapp has added to the service new information from satellite images. Now, thanks to the Global Startup Program (Italian Ministry of Economic Development and ICE) the service is available in the UK.

Goal 14 – Life below water: tracking boats to fight illegal fishing

Studiomapp applied Artificial Intelligence to satellite images with two objectives: to identify and locate boats, and to monitor harbour activities. The results can be cross-referenced with AIS data to find illegal activities. With this solution, we won the NATO “Defence Innovation Challenge” in May.
